With his polyglot background and jet hopping lifestyle, Gilles Snowcat is no stranger to the ways of the world. Snowcat's disc "Mokomoko Collection" is an introduction to his well-traveled perspective, offering a diverse array of entertaining pop tunes ranging from reggae to psychedelic tinged R and B to punk and even progressive rock. Backed by a top notch band assembled with connections acquired from decades as a musician, Gilles' earthy baritone conveys rock swagger (Kaisou), humor and wonder (I Could Live In Airplane), raucous absurdity (My Best Friend Is My Own Ghost), and romantic tenderness and admiration (Mokomoko), among others.
The extended instrumental core of the album that starts with the midde of "I Could Live In An Airplane" and follows with "Rite of The Circling Food" ventures into a travelog describing the luxuries of travel and ending with a brilliantly composed art rock /psychedelic/avante garde paean to one of those nights at an Asian restaurant when, after a couple glasses of sake or plum wine, the vast panoply of culinary delights presented on the table rotating in front of you has a hypnotic effect. That this is conveyed wordlessly is a credit to Snowcat's musical skills, which show up in the album's tunes and his instrumental contributions as well. The album's finale, "Mokomoko" sung in Japanese, reveals the romantic soul guiding Snowcat through his adventures, beneath the comic exterior. (Though I speak not a word of Japanese, this comes across very clearly). Snowcat's theatrical flair for inhabiting the personalities of fictional characters portrayed in his songs, along with the support of his ace musical team makes "MokoMoko Collection" an highly recommended, at times brilliant foray into 21st century Euro pop.

(RCL, Belgium)

An album of paradoxes: dirty and elegant, innovative and conservative, experimental and déja-vu (...) I hated it at first listen, now it grows on me. (Ray Ng, Hong Kong)

(Thierry, Belgium)

A lust-driven record, with infectious bass lines and an after midnight pub-rock voice. Pretty wild. (Phil E., London)

Once you start caressing the fluffy Mokomoko Collection, it purrs then leaps at you, claws out, like a wild uncontrolable feline! Terrifying! Yet so good. My ears hadn't been challegenged that way since the Clash's Sandinista, back in 1980! Far away from nowadays autotuned voices and aseptised productions, MokoMoko Collection mixes the elegance of art-rock, the raw power of punk and the swing of dub elements. Definitely rock.

Another infamous solo record from the delusional second-rate singer lost in his feline character antics, Gilles Snowcat. The production is crispy, the sound outdated (OMG that reggae thing, even the Clash were'nt that clumsy in 1980 -just close) and the songs ridiculously self-indulgent, check the endless jamming on track 5, and last but not least the overwhelming keyboards sound like if they came from a 1970s disco porn movie OST. As if wasn't enough, there's hardly a sense of unity through these 9 songs, it goes from that white reggae to an unknown kind of garage punk, not to mention the elevator music that closes the cd and some arty buffooneries in-between, to match the requirements of street credibility standards. Get back to reality, Snowcat, your claws are carbon-14 dated, music has changed since. Leave your amusement park costume, get some singing lessons, buy a post-1985 keyboard (yes, i assume there are some) and join a good band. Or get a real job.

(...) i can't believe this boring reggae soup comes from the guy who once was behind Tales of acid ice cream, the most daring album of the 1990s!  Get some acid man.
(Boje, Sweden)

Cute bowl

I'm enjoying "The Mokomoko Collection." It's a lot of fun. (...) I can relate to "Rites of the Circling Food." I've been at Chinese restaurants where the circular center of the table is spinning, offering a dizzying array of delectable choices. (...)Where can I get some of this "secret milk" milk number three?
(Keith W., USA)

J'ai réécouté Mokomoko collection. Chouette album!
(Quentin N., Switzerland)

Definitely not for everyone. You obviously do what you like and don't try to fit any category. Despite some elements of reggae all through the record, it is far more ambitious and hard to label, even by arty standards. You show the middle-finger to mainstream business and that's why I respect you. This is what rock should be, after all.
(SPC, London)

You have a future here as tarento! you vision of Japan is unique. nicely done.

(...) just hurt my ears like only Cut the Crap [ndt: the Clash] did back in 1985.:) Same scratchy production, voices are also out of tune, same overuse of keys, same misuse of reggae... it sucks but I like it! :) Punk's definitely not dead! ah ah!
(U-boast, UK)

Hate reggae when played by white. But the first track is just good.

Monstrueux! Bien crasseux comme un bon Iggy. Après l'iguane, voici le chat! A quand le live?
(Stéphane, France)

Hey mr snowcat we're in 2012! Ever thought of keeping your sound current? This has no interest to me.

This is not a reggae album by any means, most likely a reggae-flavoured experimental rock record. Refreshing but not authentic enough. Very intriguing artwork, have you seen [the movie] Chinatown?

As a Kiss fan I like your voice that sounds more and more like Peter Criss!!! I'm less into that reggae thing but the rocking parts are great. I played 'my best friend is my own ghost' 10 times last morning, it woke me up like dynamite!

Here's your track by track comment (...):
Kaiso: the best song of the album, good groove. A hit.
Three kinds of milk: wow that shitty ska with those horrible synths, even as a joke i wouldn't buy! Sorry. A definite miss.
Room 211: too arty, new romantic or so for my taste, it goes nowhere. A miss.
Lady gomi: interesting, a little aggressive yet pleasant. Almost a hit.
I could live in an airplane: OMG will that jam ever end? Self indulgent, just what gave the 70s a bad name. A miss.
Rites of the circling food: works well with some pot. Only with pot. A hit (with pot), a miss (without pot).
Legs and liquor: a very nice and lovely ballad, sounds so nostalgic? A hit.
My best friend is my own ghost: Duh what's that??? Sinatra meets Motorhead!!! Half a hit, half a miss.
Moko moko: elevator music, i've always hated that crooning soft jazz. A terrible miss. A hit in an elevator though.
(Kami Goreng, Thailand)
